Mortgage Rates Improve For 2nd Straight Day

After leveling-off yesterday Mortgage Rates saw some solid improvements today, in many cases dropping Best-Execution rates by an eighth of a point. Yesterday we noted that things could be volatile through the end of this week, but today that volatility worked in our favor. The Secondary Mortgage Market opened strong, quickly weakened in choppy trading, and progressively recovered beyond the AM strength by the end of the day. Today's Rates: BESTEXECUTION 30YR FIXED - More evenly split between 3.875...

As Lenders Learn to Manage Fraud, its Nature Changes

While overall rates of mortgage related fraud appear to have fallen significantly in 2011, some particular manifestations have increased dramatically according to a new report authored by CoreLogic. The company predicts that fraud related U.S. residential mortgage originations will total $7.4 billion this year, a near 40 percent decline from the estimated $12 billion experienced in 2010. The dollar figure placed on fraud is down partially because of the decline in mortgage volume, but lenders are...

Servicer Compensation Proposals Ready for Public Comment

The Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA) is requesting public comment on two alternative mortgage servicing compensation structures . The proposed structures are the result of work done under a Joint Initiative involving Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae (the GSEs), FHFA, HUD, FHA, and Ginnie Mae. FHFA's stated intention in issuing a directive to the GSEs last January to participate in such planning was to improve service for borrowers, reduce servicers' risk, and provide flexibility for guarantors to...

After Several Ugly Days, Mortgage Rates Level Off

After several days of progressively worse Mortgage Rates , things turned around a bit today. Or rather, it might be better to say that things LEVELED OFF. On average, rates are ending the day unchanged to microscopically better than yesterday's latest offerings. Month and quarter-end are creating some behind-the-scenes causes for recent market volatility and with two more days left in September, things could remain volatile. Today's Rates: BESTEXECUTION 30YR FIXED - 4.0%, but with a few 3.875%'s...

MBS Give Back All of Their Post-FOMC Gains

Despite a bit of a bounce back late in the day, MBS sank to 102-00 in Fannie 3.5's by 3pm today. This was the highest that 3.5's traded the morning of the FOMC announcement that sent them skyrocketing 2 points in the 24 hours that followed. Granted there's a bit of overrun from the 102-00 mark to the 101-25 "concrete ceiling" that had previously been the closing high, but the longer term chart makes it seem like we're effectively testing our right to continue to operate in this new higher range ...

LO Comp Lawsuit Results; TBW Accounting Firm Sued; Investors Gearing up for VA Funding Fee Change

Some things you just can't make up. Arch West died last week of natural causes at the age of 97, and when he is buried this weekend, Arch West will have Doritos sprinkled over his urn. That is because Arch was the inventor of Dorritos, a staple of road-trips and mortgage banker desk drawers all over the nation. Doritos were first introduced in Southern California in 1964 and then launched nationally in 1967, and college parties have been better ever since. Here's something that hasn't been on the...
