Bank's Push for Profitability May Lead to 'Inappropriate Levels of Risk', OCC Report

The Office of Comptroller of the Currency has issued a spring 2012 Semiannual Risk Perspective covering national banks and federal savings associations. The report looks at the risks confronting those institutions and the potential that banks may take excessive risks as they try to improve profitability. The report says that as the banking industry continues to emerge from the recession and to adjust to shifts in its operating and regulatory environment these shifts are inducing large changes in...

Oversight Committee Issues Second Report on Countrywide "VIP" Program

The House Oversight and Government Reform Committee issued a report today on Countrywide Mortgage and its so-called VIP loan program which the committee said was "a tool used by Countrywide to build goodwill with lawmakers and other individuals positioned to benefit the company. In the years that led up to the 2007 housing market decline, Countrywide VIPs were positioned to affect dozens of pieces of legislation that would have reformed [Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae]." We Have A Chance…Victories In The Battle Against Lost Home Equity

One of my favorite movies during the July 4th holiday is The Patriot. The sacrifices Benjamin Martin and many others make to win a chance at freedom against insurmountable odds always inspire and remind me what an incredible blessing it is to live in America. I find a kindred spirit in the ragtag militia that Benjamin leads into battle. They aren't well respected by the regular army, and often run at the first sign a skirmish is not going their way. Leadership falls apart, the lines disburse...

Profit Per Loan Up Dramatically - Mortgage Banks Focused on Purchase Biz; LO's Not Exempt from OT?

On July 4th in 1776, the Declaration of Independence was approved by the Continental Congress, setting the 13 colonies on the road to freedom as a sovereign nation. (This year it has turned tomorrow into somewhat of a "get away" day for many.) As always, parades, fireworks and backyard barbecues await. It is estimated by the Census that there were 2.5 million people living in the nation at that point, and now there are 314 million . Check this out, for some non-mortgage news: Reuters reports that...

Steven's resignation and appointment as president of Sun Trust Mortgage was announced by both MBA and the parent company of his new employer, Sun Trust Bank, on May 30.
