Fannie's Interesting HARP 2.0 Shift; Spotlight on the Agencies; Fortress' Chief to Take Some Time Off

The JD Power Survey is mostly known for car rankings. But the rating firm also takes a look at mortgage lenders . Congrats in the above to Quicken Loans , which came out on top. But Quicken Loans had some backtracking to do recently. Its OnQ bulletin announced one thing, which was corrected with the final result being that Quicken will no longer offer the "non-agency loan product" in 2012. Although somewhat still confusing, one broker noted, "The non-agency jumbo they are discontinuing is their jumbo...

Mortgage Rates Steady to Slightly Improved as Extended Weekend Approaches

Mortgage Rates are slightly improved today after minor increases to borrowing costs over the past two days. Before that, rates spent several days at record lows with little deviation in borrowing costs. We mention "borrowing costs" because the costs involved in obtaining prevailing rates are actually what's moving as opposed to the rates themselves. Best-Execution 30yr Fixed rates remain at 3.875%. Low volume and year-end lack of participation continue to distort movements in the secondary mortgage...

Report: Home Buyers are In, Sellers are Out

The Mortgage Bankers Association (MBA) has demonstrated again that the public's perception of the real estate market depends on which side of the closing table they plan to sit. A study entitled "The Great Recession and Attitudes Toward Homebuying " sponsored by MBA's Research Institute for Housing America (RIHA) concluded that prospective homebuyers believe now is a good time to buy, given today's low home prices and low mortgage interest rates , but potential sellers are nearly unanimous in reporting...

Shadow Inventory, Moving not Falling

According to data reported on Wednesday by CoreLogic, the residential shadow inventory as of October stood at 1.6 million housing units, a supply of 5 months. This was relatively unchanged from figures in July. In October 2010 the inventory was an estimated 1.9 million units, a 7 months' supply. CoreLogic said that the flow of new seriously delinquent loans into the shadow inventory has been offset by the roughly equal sales flow of real estate owned and short sales . Some 3 million distressed homes...

Biggest Sell-Off For 10yr Yields In Almost 2 Months. MBS Weather The Storm

Late November definitely felt like more of a sell-off than today, but in terms of single session 8am-3pm losses, 10yr yields rose the most since October 27th, just over 10 basis points. Although MBS weathered this storm quite well (discussed earlier, in more detail HERE ), there's only so much spread tightening to be done before MBS have to give up a few ticks. That prompted an earlier alert from MBS Live: MBS Hit Lows of the Day. Reprice For The Worse Reported 1:33PM Shortly after 10yr yields broke...

Borrowing Costs For Record Low Rates Crept Higher Today

After several days at record lows with little deviation in borrowing costs, Mortgage Rates worsened somewhat today. The weakness, however, does not affect the 3.875% Best-Execution rate; the borrowing costs involved in obtaining that rate are merely higher. Although there was stronger economic data on the home-front this morning, the real market mover continues to be Europe. Lately, another major consideration is that the will of the markets is immediately felt due to low year-end volume. Please...
